Armament Of Teachers

In october 2015, independent.co.uk published these facts.

There have been 142 school shootings in the US since the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, a near average of one a week, according to data compiled by Mass Shooting Tracker.”

In 2013, The Arkansas Christian Academy in Bryant, Arkansas shocked the U.S when it announced that some of its staff members will be armed and ready to protect the school in case of a threat. School shootings have been an issue for a while, with the first major school shooting happened in Austin, Texas in 1966, where a college student went into the clock-tower and used a sniper rifle to murder 17 people and injure 31. The next major school shooting occurred at Columbine, Littleton Colorado, where two students went on a rampage and killed 12 students and 1 teacher and hurt 21 other people before finally shooting themselves. And finally, in one of the more horrendous cases, 20 year old Adam Lanza killed his mother and then forced his way into an elementary school. He killed 6 staff members, and shot and killed 20 children. None of these children were over 7. In all three of these cases, none of the teachers were armed with any adequate protection. When the Arkansas Christian Academy released the announcement, people were shocked. This sparked the “Should Teachers Have Guns?” debate again, more aggressive than ever.

I believe that teachers should have guns to protect the students in school. This is because of 4 key reasons. Law enforcement cannot effectively respond within 2 minutes of a call, as most units are not stationed directly near a school. Teachers will be able stop shootings before they happen as the thought of an armed school is sometimes enough to ward off potential shooters. If a shooter came in the school, the teacher would be able to defend the children and the parents would feel much safer knowing their kids will most likely be safe in case of an emergency. Teachers would not be required to be armed, but if they chose to, they would have to get a permit and all the proper training.

I think that teachers should be armed because in most situations, law enforcement cannot effectively and quickly respond in a school shooting. According to the department of homeland security, “The average school shooting last 12.5 minutes, while the average police response time for threats is 18 minutes” This effectively shows how the shooting could be over before the police even arrive at the scene, which can be a disaster. IF we had armed teachers, the shooting could be over before it starts if a staff member shot the perpetrator before the perpetrator shot anyone else. Law enforcement could arrive on scene if the gunman was still engaged with teachers, allowing them to react together and save more lives than waiting and hiding. This is why  teachers using weapons can save more lives than waiting for the police to arrive because by then it could already be over. It doesn’t matter if you get there 1 minute after it's over, everything would have happened and the school shooter has most likely killed themselves.

Moving on, I believe that teachers should be armed because the thought of an armed teacher will be enough to scare off potential shooters. Another way of thinking about it is that If I have a gun, and you are thinking of mugging someone, you probably aren't going to mug the person with the gun. If everyone had a gun, you probably wouldn’t mug anybody at all in fear of dying. This also goes with school shootings as people might be afraid to shoot the school up if they might die., unless of course, the person who is carrying out the shooting is mentally ill. Even just a sliver of doubt in that individual's mind may amount a millisecond of time for the teachers to eliminate the threat.

Next, I believe that teachers should have firearms because if a shooter came in the school, the teacher would be able to defend the children and the parents would feel much safer knowing their kids will most likely be safe in case of an emergency. If I was a parent, and I found out there was an shooter at the school, I would immediately be concerned for my kids lives. With an armed teacher in the classroom, the children will be safe and protected from any threats that may present themselves. If I was a parent and I had an armed teacher in the school, I would feel way safer than not having a armed teacher in the school. Some parents might be concerned on how the students could steal a gun, which can easily be taken care of by carrying the guns on the teacher and the student not knowing which teacher has guns. Genie strickland, a parent says this about her school having guns: “I think you’ve got to do whatever you’ve got to do”.  If a student started frisking a teacher, that would be pretty suspicious and raise some red flags. If I was a student, I would also feel safe knowing that during a lockdown, and someone in the school has a weapon that they will use against the intruder to ensure our safety. Some people might say that the school teachers might go crazy and shoot up a school, but if that is the case they shouldn’t be teaching in the first place!  Another example is that in Israel, Palestinian terrorists were attacking Israeli school groups. Israels response: arming teachers to make sure that doesn’t happen. No teacher has shot a kid or gone crazy and killed all the kids, which shows that teachers are moral and not crazy.

Finally, I believe teachers should be allowed to bring firearms to school because teachers would not be required to be armed, but if they chose to, they would have to get a permit and all the proper training. So that means you aren’t forcefully giving someone a gun and saying go train and everything. Because if you do that you will get a negative attitude in your training and if you don’t want to do something, you most likely will try the least amount possible to do that one thing. But if we allow people who either already have a weapon and a concealed carry permit or in some states where they have constitutional carry, which allows you to carry a handgun without a permit, the teacher will receive special instruction and really learn how to operate the weapon so that if they need to use it, they don’t falter under the recoil and shoot and hit an innocent person. That's why schools will have the option for their teachers to carry, instead of making every single staff member carry a weapon, which could result in a number of innocent deaths in case of a school shooting.

In conclusion,
I believe that teachers should be allowed to carry firearms at school because law enforcement cannot effectively respond within 2 minutes of a call, as most units are not stationed directly near a school. I defend these because I believe that this is a changing world, and the world out there right now for many young individuals isn’t the same as it was 20-30 years ago. No law can stop these from happening, but if we can prevent more loss of life by preventing the criminal from killing people, then we can truly try to change the course of how the world is right now. If we could pass a law to prevent these, I would but criminals do not follow laws, and they will find a way to obtain weapons while other americans would be restricted because of that. That is why I believe teachers should be armed.

The Story Of The Hector

March 20th, 1916.

The war is still going on. I thought that this horror would be over by now, but the war still rages on. Rumors of battles that rage on for months reach us by pigeon when we harbor in port. Our trusty ship, the DD-1129 HMS “Hector” has been patrolling forever. No German u boats, no nothing. It's been bland. I keep my memoirs of home tight in my mind, as I fear the Germans are getting stronger. I haven't even seen a German destroyer, nonetheless a German cruiser. All were most likely smashed by our navy at the beginning. I wonder what is happening today on the front. The good news is that the french front is stabilized, but from what I heard the russians are getting smashed and the italians aren’t faring so well also. I speculate that this war should be over in a year now, as the french are going to win this year. Some people call me crazy, but I truly believe that the french will be able to breakthrough the fronts and win this war, for the sake of the russians and the french.

We were strolling, at around 9:00 when suddenly a tide pool opened up in front of us. We were in the North Sea, and A Whirlpool opened up in open water?  I was stunned, and so was the captain. “To Arms!” he shouted as the alarm bell sounded and we mobilized the guns, expecting some German trick. And I swear to everything that is holy, the most un-godly sound came out of that Whirlpool. It sounded like a demon was summoned through that hole, like a portal. Then, as my vision started to fade and i had to grab the deck rail from falling down, I realized, what if we are going through the hole like a portal? Then, darkness.

We woke with complete darkness surrounding the ship. It had to be at least midnight, and I was one of the first to wake. I stumbled into the halls, wondering where the gaping hole in our ship was. The decks rumbled with the roar of that ungodly sound, and my vision started to blur.

“Wake up john!” My mate Pierre shouted. The deck creaked and groaned with the sound of welded metal. I slowly got up and looked around. There was no visible flooding, and the was no tilt on the destroyer that I could tell.

Suddenly, the at arms bell rang again, and that's when I heard it: there were at least 200 other alarm bells sounding from the sea, and some of the announcements were in German.

The ungodly roar came out again, and with it a devilish creature arose from the depths of the sea. This creature had no place on our earth, and I believe that the only reason we saw it was because in fact, we were not on our world but instead on its world. The roar was a invisible hand slapping me to action, as I ran to my station and all around me others seemed to do the same.

As we ran, I saw the creature devour a patrol boat and the crew aboard. Their screams were so loud, fish came up to see what was happening. The Germans were the first to fire their guns, with a dreadnought, the heaviest and strongest class of ships at sea opening up with their 15 inch shells at the creature. The creature roared and snapped a destroyer, about the same size as ours in half with strength never seen before on this earth.  Finally I made it to my post, helping pierre man the five inch gun, one of 5 we have on our ship. We aimed our cannon, and fired.

The loud crack of the 5 inch shell resounded throughout the deck as the deck guns opened up on the ungodly and unworldly creature. The roars that resonated as even more shells hit it could only be described as hell on earth, as anyone who did not have ear protection instantly was paralyzed by the noise. Our loader, Dan, came running up as we fired our first shell, looking worried but not enough to be incapable of his duties.

“Dan, we need another shell!” Pierre screamed as the monster roared its tentacled head and smashed a ship like it was a human breaking a twig.

A runner came down from the captain's office about the same time we were loaded and ready to fire our shell.

“What is it private?” I questioned.

The runner, out of breath panted and wheezed while speaking. It seemed he had a rough day, as we all had.

“The-*wheeze* captain has co-*wheeze* contacted the Germans, we are -*wheeze* are working together.”

The poor soul ran off, apparently going to other crews to inform them the same thing. The new positions came in on our telegraph, with the gun height and position to be aimed, instead of guessing like last time.

The ship fell silent, with only the waves making sound as we anxiously awaited the order to fire at the monster again. Instead, we started moving away from the monster, instead of towards it!

As soon as I saw the slight outline of land ahead, I knew where we were going. I knew that this plan might work, but we have to annoy the monster to get it to follow us.

“Pierre, Fire the gun” I ordered with a stern voice.

“But John, the orders were not to fire” Pierre said uncertainly.

“I know pierre, but we have to keep the monster following us! If it wanders off it will kill something else, and the plan won’t work! Don’t you see! It transported every human in its radius and created a parallel world with the same buildings and everything, the only difference is that we are the only living things on this parallel world! FIRE THE GUN!”

The gun fired at the monster, who had started to lose interest in us and looked as if it was going to grab more humans. But as it got hit, it turned around and with a fury that I could not describe to you, it came charging at us as if it was a enraged demon who was born out of a mountain of fire.

Suddenly, the alarm bell sounded, with the horns and the captain's voice overhead:

“Brace positions men! We have entered an active minefield. Open fire!”

The Germans were giving the same message to their men as the guns rattled and fired at the monster, who came charging even faster than I could think a creature could, while roaring and screaming. Suddenly, the monster roared with a sound that burst my eardrums, and everyone else's too. The water seemed to rise around the monster, but not as if it was controlling it but as if it was being attacked.

The monster had entered the minefield, and the mines were picking away at its skin as it roared and screamed. Blood drifted through the water like oil as the monster made a sound that gave you goosebumps every second you heard it.

The roaring stopped 1 hour later, and as we watched, the monster fell into the sea, and a wave the height of a 1 story building raced towards us. Suddenly, I got very dizzy, and started to black out.

My last thoughts before we passed out were:

“Not again.”

Before the Sun Sets

Sun rises in the east,
Sets in the west.
Oppressed by police, the people flee
Laughed at yelled at,
THEY RUN
and they come to me
the land of the free.

When they arrive, everything seems great
But the hate boils inside like green fire bursting out of a volcano.
The oppressed persons realize what it is
It's a mirror of their countries again

The people rise up and shout
“We came here for it to be different, not the same!”
These words don’t work
Bystanders still watch
Doing nothing

Finally, they stand
Figures speak, people follow
The fire of a social revolution burns

The oppressors laugh
They think that nothing will happen
But soon, they become afraid
The revolution surges
Finally, the oppressed are recognized.

The hate is no more
All together they stand
Finally they are free
From the mirror image of their homeland.
